When to Replace Your Garage Door Opener

Posted on: October 29, 2014

As a main point of entry into your St. Petersburg home, having a garage door opener that consistently works is imperative. Without it, you may be stuck outside, or your car may be stuck inside. Either way, knowing when to replace it can save you plenty of time and money. Quite often, the most obvious signs that it’s time to replace the opener are frequent break downs and expensive repairs. However, there some other less obvious things you should consider if you have an older opening system.

  1. Safety Reversal. Newer garage door openers will come equipped with a safety feature to keep it from closing if there is anything underneath it such as a car, pet, child, or bike. There are sensor placements on either side of the door frame that detect anything blocking their line of site to each other.  When blocked it causes the door to stop closing and reverse into a fully open position. A garage door without a safety reversal feature is just an accident waiting to happen.
  2. Battery backup. Here in St. Petersburg, we see plenty of heavy storms that can knock out our power. If this happens right before you have to leave to pick the kids up from school, and your car is parked in the garage, you will be wishing you had a battery backup.
  3. Noise. Older models will use an antiquated chain drive to open and close the door, which can be extremely loud. Newer ones will either have a belt drive or an updated chain drive; both of these will be very quiet, and keep your neighbors happy.
  4. Security. Older St. Petersburg garage door openers will have a fixed code that can easily be figured out by untrustworthy people. Modern models will have a rolling code feature, where it constantly changes, or the ability to set a new code, just for a specific amount of time.
